Exercise Pools
Warm water gentle exercise can be beneficial for acute and chronic back pain and other conditions.
You do not need a referral to come to one of our pools but it is advisable to check with a health professional that warm water exercising is suitable for your condition.
Oaklands School Hydropool
BackCare – Lothian Branch hire the Hydropool at Oaklands School in the Pennywell/Drylaw area at 750 Ferry Road, Edinburgh EH4 2UB. The pool is located at the back of the school. Turn off Ferry Road onto Pennywell dual carriageway and then immediately turn left into the Health Centre. There is a small lane on the right hand side of the Health Centre that leads around to the pool.
Sessions, each lasting 40 minutes, are on a Wednesday evening from 4.30 to 6pm.
Braidburn School Swimming Pool
BackCare – Lothian Branch hire the Swimming pool at Braidburn School, 107 Oxgangs Road North, Edinburgh EH14 1ED.
This pool is bigger and offers the opportunity to swim or exercise (e.g. walking in water) in a spacious pool in warmer water than a normal pool.
Sessions, each lasting 40 minutes, are on a Wednesday evening from 4.30 to 6pm.
At all our Pools
A lifeguard is on duty.
A physiotherapist specialising in pain management is in attendance weekly and provides free advice and guidance on suitable water-based exercises.
Members must be able to undress/dress themselves and enter and leave the pool unaided.
Booking is essential as the number of members that can exercise in the pool at any one time is limited.
Costs
Newcomers are offered 3 trial sessions at £7 each paid in advance as one sum of £21.
Thereafter pool fees are £30 per month paid by Standing Order.
Fees are payable regardless of attendance as Backcare still have to pay rental and other costs for the pools.
The pool co-ordinator has the discretion to waive or reduce fees if you cannot attend because of prolonged illness, or have financial difficulties.
If you require to bring a carer to the pool, carers are exempt from pool fees.
No cash is accepted at poolside
