“My discectomy surgery to remove calcium which had become embedded in my spinal column was only partially successful. This left me with nerve damage. I found it difficult and painful to walk and exercise. Exercising in the warm water gave me relief and helped to improve my muscle tone. I was able to dispense with my walking aids. I have found attending the pool on a regular basis has been so beneficial to my health and it is nice to meet other people who have similar conditions. I wanted to give something back to Backcare so I now volunteer at the pool.”
“I attend the pool sessions and have had a really good improvement in my overall health. I have many different conditions that affect all my joints. The Orthotics nurse at my hospital I attend for special footwear asked what I’ve been doing so I told her about Backcare. She said to keep it up as the strength in my feet had improved massively. I will always have the problems due to the joint deformities but at least I know they are as good as they can be thanks to the hydrotherapy”
“I was diagnosed with ankylosis spondylitis nearly 50 years ago. I have always tried to exercise regularly including swimming, but over the last year my back and hips have become stiffer and sorer. The weekly sessions in the warm water pool have been hugely beneficial to me. Our physiotherapist perfectly strikes the balance between giving guidance, but stepping back to let individuals do their exercises at their own pace. My lower back and hips have noticeably loosened off and I very much look forward to the weekly session. The group is very friendly and the opportunity to share experiences has been very welcome!”
“I have osteoarthritis and I’m now awaiting a hip replacement operation. Going to the pool sessions has helped me manage my pain doing gentle exercises in the warm water with the support of the physiotherapist. I use a small rubber ring to encourage leg movement and use a noodle to swim on my back and gentle kick my legs. Also walking backwards and sidewards in the water helps with my balance and mobility. I have also met and chatted to many of the regulars…I look forward to attending weekly and miss it if I don’t or can’t attend .I feel this activity has benefitted me and would recommend it to anyone struggling with their mobility, balance or fitness.”
”I am an octogenarian who has been affected by widespread osteoarthritis for the best part of 50 years. I have 5 replacement joints. I have been attending Backcare warm water therapy sessions for 17 years. It has undoubtedly helped me to continue to lead an active life at a much higher level than I would have otherwise. I have been able to maintain muscle strength and mobility in the lead up to joint replacement operations and it has helped in my post-op. rehab. Apart from the evident benefit of the warm water therapy and the helpful advice from the physiotherapist, being able to share the sessions with people who understand the issues and to exchange helpful ideas, is a really positive benefit. I cannot recommend it highly enough.”
“I have chronic back conditions, some of which include scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, sciatica, neuropathic pain. On the whole (since the age of 12- now in my early 50’s) I have been able to manage my pain through my tried and tested ways, however, I had a particularly bad episode late 2023 and at that point was introduced to Backcare through my GP practice.Since attending the weekly sessions I have found that my mobility has improved immensely andI am able to walk longer distances which I hadn’t been able to do so for quite some years. I can honestly say it’s been the best thing I have been introduced to. My pain is now at an all time lowand is so much more manageable which is brilliant. I do know if I have any new aches I can always ask for exercises to relieve these symptoms from our in-house physio. I have found as well that meeting and chatting to some of the members at the pool has helped too. Wish I had been introduced to the warm water therapy years ago!”
